Today I got a stock news alert on a symbol that came through as an advertisement

I was surprised to see that news stories with embedded symbol alerts are now also coming across as advertisements that have nothing to do with news (outside of the advertiser touting their market skill or otherwise) - These stories should at least have the alert symbols contained in them taken out of that field. (the :SYMBOL: identifiers)

Advertising posing as a news story is fine, however it should not be made to look like breaking news on the stocks it contains. It just triggers an alert (in my system anyway) that takes the user to the advertorial. Maybe a new identifier :ADVERT: could be added in the symbol field so that those that want to see these 'breaking' headlines and stories can collect them.

David, can you provide an example? Unfortunately, the PR wire services charge people to send the press releases, thus, they often allow releases that aren't true news to come through. There is nothing we can do to flag these if the wire doesn't flag it. We send an unedited wire for nearly all of the news sources (other than DTN's own newsroom content).

BTW: This isn't new. There have been stock picking services touting their sites coming across the wires for years.

We may end up dropping the Internet Wire (I think they are called market wire now). They have been known to accept these spam stories before. I will contact them to see if they will continue, if so, we will drop the wire from our service.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this - both me and my customers appreciate it.
There is enough information overload without adding a form of spam into the news alerts.

Thanks!

David
